MYTHS ABOUT CATS

Fluff.
Everyone knows that myths about cats abound – we’ve all heard the
old wives tales and stories handed down through a chain of fear and
ignorance.‘Cats can see in the dark’…not really – their eyes need a certain amount of light to
function…’Cats hate water’...all of the cats I’ve known
have had a fascination for running water – especially a flushing
toilet! ‘Cats can’t be
trained’...But I know several people who have trained their
cats to use the toilet.
Instead of perpetuating the popular myths
about cats, take the time to read more on the fallacies we believe in ... and remember to keep a practical and
responsible attitude when dealing with our warm and loving kitty friends.
Some myths, the most persistent and
detrimental, deal with babies and pregnant women.
Scare
stories about cats and babies are just plain nonsense.
If you search the internet, read any book or
ask any expert you'll get same answer - that these stories originate from
ancient folklore, based on nothing but sheer ignorance - no facts
what-so-ever

PREGNANT WOMEN The disease toxoplasmosis relates to pregnant
women. If a pregnant woman has a cat and the kitty litter needs to be changed she simply needs
to be extra careful about washing her hands. In fact it’s more likely that the pregnant woman
will be exposed to this disease in the kitchen handling raw or undercooked meat, or in the
garden getting soil on the hands while planting flowers etc.
EXTERMINATION It isn't true that extermination is the best way to reduce stray cat
populations.
It has been proven, see - www.feralcat.com
& www.alleycat.org - that a
trap/neuter/release programme is the most successful method of reducing both stray cat numbers and the
spread of feline diseease - with the least cost to local government and
residents - while providing a better, healthier
life for the animals themselves. This is an intelligent, humane and civilized approach
to animal management.
Uncaring, archaic and ignorant attitudies are what
should be exterminated.
